We are celebrating 75 years of Fronius. What began back in 1945 as a one-man business with a simple idea has today become a mainstay of the industry. Over the past three-quarters of a century, Fronius has developed from a regional specialist repair workshop to a global player in welding technology, photovoltaics and battery charging technology.
It was Günter Fronius who got the ball rolling when he set up his specialist repair workshop for radio and electrical technology. The starting point was the Upper Austrian market town of Pettenbach, where our company is still based to this day. Battery charging technology has been Fronius’ core competence from the very beginning: at that time, charging car batteries was not a matter of course. With this in mind, Günter Fronius developed a solution so that the batteries could be used for longer and, with that, the first battery charger was born. Later, the Business Units Perfect Welding and Solar Energy expanded Fronius’ portfolio to include high-performance welding technology and innovative technologies for photovoltaics.
After numerous further developments in battery charging technology, Fronius switched from 50-Hertz chargers to high-frequency technology for the first time at the start of the 1990s. Further research work led to a real milestone in 2013: the internal resistance or Ri charging process. This automatically adjusts itself to the batteries to be charged and their condition, making each charge unique. We are currently taking the next step towards the future with lithium-ion technology, including the newly conceived digitalisation and networking of all devices.
