Welding in the food and beverage industry Pulling out all the stops against germs and bacteria

Welding in this sector is all about hygiene

Germs and bacteria have no business being present in the food industry. For this reason, surfaces and welded joints must be as smooth and as flat as possible. Weld seams that come into contact with liquids must always be ground flush. In addition, container walls and pipes must not exhibit any spatter or temper coloration after welding. Industry and regional or international standards are authoritative.

Welding processes for container and pipeline constructionn

TIG and TIG-related welding processes comply with strict regulations and standards.

Due to the high quality requirements, only TIG and TIG-related welding processes such as ArcTig or Plasma are considered in pipeline and container construction. High-alloy steels such as CrNi, nickel-based alloys, titanium, copper, or duplex are the main materials encountered. In order to avoid temper coloration and associated corrosion at the root (also called pitting), forming is essential.

Weld seams with undesirable temper coloration

Temper coloration is produced when welding without oxidation protection (forming). At these points, the passive layer of the stainless steel has been damaged by the welding process, which can lead to corrosion. The use of forming gases is therefore necessary, especially on the inside of the pipe or on the underside of the root, where the shielding gas from the welding torch cannot create a sufficient gas shroud. This is the best possible way to avoid temper discoloration and oxidation.

Forming as a prerequisite for clean weld seams

Forming is an cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and clean process that prevents temper coloration. In the first step, the air inside the pipe is displaced by shielding gas, also called forming gas. At the same time, the forming gas introduced protects the underside of the weld seam (weld seam root). Argon, argon/hydrogen mixtures, nitrogen, or nitrogen/hydrogen mixtures are used as shielding or forming gases. If forming is carried out correctly, the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel is guaranteed.
