Fronius Tauro: Robust and high performance for Poland’s market leader

3/13/2024 / Swidno, Poland
As Poland’s market leader in the wood industry, the Tartak Olczyk company is focusing on renewable energy. Production halls and warehouses are powered to a large extent with green electricity from biomass and solar energy – and the self-consumption rate is 100%. To achieve this, a total of eleven Fronius Tauro and four Fronius Symo inverters are in continuous use.

PV system plus biomass power plant – a custom-tailored energy solution

Right on trend: demand for wood as a natural product is on the rise. The wide range of products made from pine – from sawn lumber, wood pellets and turned fencing palisades to roof trusses – has made Tartak Olczyk the most successful wood manufacturer in Poland. The environmentally conscious company decided to expand its sustainable energy supply so it can meet the steadily growing energy demands of the sawmill machinery in production, especially in the summer months. In addition to the existing biomass power plant, the plan called for a new large-scale commercial PV system to ensure the greatest possible energy autonomy for their production operations.

Thanks to the customized solution with biomass and solar power, all production halls as well as all warehouses are now powered to a large extent by green electricity. Tartak Olczyk relied on Fronius and our robust Fronius Symo and Fronius Tauro inverters to implement this custom-tailored energy solution. Fronius Tauro can be installed either centrally or decentrally as well as vertically or horizontally. This offers a high degree of flexibility and freedom in system design while also eliminating the need for additional components and cabling.

» Essential components are already integrated into the Fronius Tauro as standard – including the AC/DC surge protection. So we didn't have to worry about additional protection components or calculate the installations for them. What’s more, the Fronius Tauro does not need any overhead protection at all, even outdoors. That's what sold us on it. «

- explains Seweryn Grabiec from installation company Soleko Polska

Extremely economical in any situation

By strategically positioning the project inverters close to the PV modules and orienting the modules to the southeast and southwest, and combining this with AC daisy chaining and the flexibility in the DC connection area, cable capacities could be reduced and transmission losses kept to a minimum. This likewise reduces the overall cost of operating the large-scale PV system in 'Swidno, Poland.

The Fronius Tauro also scores points with its fast installation and efficient maintenance: when a problem occurs, in most cases only the affected power stage set needs to be replaced, instead of the entire inverter. And only one person is needed to do the job. In complex installations like this one, that simplifies the process significantly and saves time and money. We make it easier for our customers and partners to get 24 hours of sun with our targeted online support and a variety of digital tools for order picking, installing and optimizing the PV system. We and our system partners can perform maintenance work exceptionally quickly and easily with the help of Fronius Solar.SOS.

» Our goal: an efficient PV system on three different roofs – each 150 meters long, with only one feed-in – as an addition to the existing biomass power plant. Our answer: a durable energy solution with Fronius project inverters. «

- Seweryn Grabiec

Maximum flexibility outdoors

The biggest challenge in building the rooftop system was connecting the PV modules, which each span the 150-meter-long roofs of three production halls and warehouses, with the connection to the AC grid located at the very end of one building.

In the 1,314 MWp high-performance PV system for Tartak Olczyk, 9 Fronius Tauro ECO 100.0-3-D, 2 Fronius Tauro ECO 50.0-3-D and 4 Fronius Symo 20.0-3-D inverters were installed. The Fronius Tauro inverters are linked together using AC daisy chaining to form multiple smaller grids. This means they can be linked in a series, making them not only practical but above all cost-efficient, and the output of a commercial system can be precisely matched to the requirements.
